Winter can be a quiet time for greenery and color in our lives.

Calendula

These herbaceous plants come in a variety of colors and are often referred to as pot marigolds.

Your calendula can be grown in pastel hues, yellows or even bi-color variations, providing you with plenty of options as you get ready to plant.

Calendula is also great for food garnishes, herbal remedies and lotions and salves.

They grow best in full sun, when sewn directly into your garden.

Nemesia

This small bedding plant produces a gorgeous flower that is similar to an orchid, with four petals on top and a lobed petal below.

When temperature are mild, nemesia will produce numerous large flowers, with heights of 1-2 feet.

Nemesia come in a wide range of colors, even bi-color varieties. They’re known for growing best when temperatures are on the cooler side, and will bloom in winter in areas with no frost.

Overwatering can lead to stem rot, and full sun is best for the best bloom.

Hellebores

Known by many as the Lenten Rose (because they bloom around the beginning of Lent), the Hellebore comes in 15 different species, each of which offers a different beautiful bloom.

Some of the hybrid species of Hellebore offer double flowers, a new range of colors, and a variety of foliage types.

This flower also offers a uniquely long bloom time. Many gardeners enjoy their flowering Hellebores from January to May.

They do require part shade and rich soil, but if you have land with each of these, you can delight in these beautiful flowers during the long winter.

Snowflakes

These aptly-named winter flowers are native to Eurasia, and grow to around half a foot in height.

Their flowers are fragrant, bell-shaped and beautiful, with green spots at the end of each tepal.

The Snowflake flowers typically bloom from February to March, depending on your soil type. They prefer full sun, but will tolerate moderate shade if your soil is rich.

Winter Jasmine

These hardy deciduous shrubs can grow up to 4 feet tall, with gorgeous bright yellow flowers that appear before their leaves unfold.

The winter variety will typically flower in late February into March, and they work well when planted in groups.

The plant does prefer full sunlight, and needs to be watered regularly.

Chansonette Camellia

These breathtaking plants produce rich magenta pink flowers, paired with deep green foliage.

They are ideal for cutting and displaying, or for growing in mass.

They flourish most in part-shade conditions, and require regular watering, especially when soils are dry.

They can bloom from October through January, and often reach 2-3 feet in height.
